A história de Al Capone
Como todo bom gângster americano do início dos anos 90, Al Capone tinha origem italiana. Sua família imigrou de Nápoles no ano de 1893. Ele era o 4 dos 9 filhos de Gabriele e Teresina Capone e frequentou a escola até sexta série, abandonando os estudos quando tinha quatorze anos.

Scarface, como também era conhecido Al Capone, ganhou muita malandragem nos diversos trabalhos que teve enquanto jovem: balconista de loja de doces, operário de uma fábrica de munição, entre muitos outros “bicos”.

Durante a juventude, Al Capone já demonstrava gostar de andar fora da lei e participava de duas “gangs de crianças”: South Brooklyn Rippers e Forty Thieves Juniors. Grupos que atormentavam e causavam muitos problemas nas ruas do Brooklyn, em Nova York, lugar onde ele morou e passou boa parte de sua vida.
Foi em Park Slope, bairro do Brooklyn, que Al Capone conheceu sua então futura esposa, Mary Coughlin, e também Johnny Torrio, que viria a ser seu grande mentor do mundo da máfia.
Aos 16 anos, Capone tornou-se membro da gangue “Five Points” e serviu o aspirante a mafioso Francesco Ioele (que era parceiro de Torrio, mais conhecido como Frankie Yale) como barman e segurança do Harvard Inn. Foi lá que ele ganho o apelido de Scarface. Uma noite, ele insultou uma mulher no bar e levou uma surra de Frank Galluccio. Essa briga acabou deixando 3 cicatrizes no rosto de Al Capone.
Por volta de 1920, Capone se mudou para Chigado com sua mulher e seu filho Albert Francis. Nessa época, Torrio já era altamente envolvido com máfia, jogos e prostituição e convidou Al para participar dos negócios.
Mas foi após a 18ª Emenda, que proibiu a venda e o consumo de álcool, que os negócios realmente evoluíram e Capone conseguiu trazer seus conhecimentos com números e sua malandragem das ruas para dentro do negócio.
Mas ao contrário de seu parceiro Torrio, com o sucesso crescente, Al Capone deixou de ser uma pessoa discreta, ganhando fama de bebedor e agitador.
O início da reputação de Al Capone
Em 1925, após uma gangue rival tentar matar Torrio, ele decidiu se retirar dos negócios e voltar para a Itália, deixando toda a operação para Capone.

Como citado anteriormente, Scarface não era nada discreto. Após a retirada de seu parceiro dos negócios, ele decidiu fazer tudo do seu jeito (que era um tanto quanto espalhafatoso). Foi nessa época que ele mudou o centro da operação para o hotel Metrópole, no centro de Chicago.
Capone não economizava dinheiro, pelo contrário, fazia questão de ter seus luxos e esbanjar para todos que queriam ver. Os jornais da época estimaram que as operações da Capone geraram US$ 100 milhões em receita anualmente.
A fama de Al Capone
Ele era comunicativo, conseguia agradar rapidamente as pessoas. Além disso, ele tinha um ar benevolente. Não era raro doações e ajudas financeiras que fazia para os mais pobres. Isso tudo ajudou na sua popularização.
Eu passei os melhores anos da minha vida dando às pessoas os prazeres mais leves, ajudando-os a se divertirem, e tudo que eu ganho é abuso, a existência de um homem caçado.
No entanto, Al Capone era um homem muito violento e teve seu nome ligado a diversos crimes e massacres, mesmo que a polícia na época nunca ter conseguido ligar diretamente o nome dele aos acontecimentos.
O massacre de São Valentim
O comércio ilegal de bebidas alcoólicas era a principal atividade de Al Capone, no entanto, com o passar dos anos, gangues rivais também entraram nesse ramo de negócios e passaram a atrapalhar as operações de Al.
Um dos principais inimigos era George “Bugs” Moran. Ele já havia tentado assassinar Al Capone e Torrio no passado.
Assim, em Fevereiro de 1929, Al Capone e Jack McGurn, seu braço direito na época, prepararam uma emboscada e mataram 7 homens da gang de Moran a sangue frio.
Como a polícia nunca conseguiu ligar o nome de Al Capone diretamente aos assassinatos, ele nunca foi preso por tais acusações, porém o público e a mídia imediatamente o culparam pelo massacre. Ele foi apelidado de “inimigo público número um” na época.
Segundo o site do FBI, em 17 de maio de 1929, Al Capone e seu guarda-costas foram presos na Filadélfia por portar armas ilegais escondidas. Eles foram sentenciados a um ano de pena. Capone cumpriu seu tempo e foi liberado em nove meses por bom comportamento, em 17 de março de 1930.
Em 5 de Junho de 1931, após grande apelo da mídia e do presidente Herbert Hoover, a investigação fiscal contra Al Capone ficou extremamente agressiva. Como a Suprema Corte havia decidido em 1927 que a renda obtida com atividades ilegais era tributável, o que deu ao governo um forte argumento para processar Capone. Em 5 de junho de 1931, o governo dos EUA finalmente indiciou Capone em 22 acusações de evasão de imposto de renda.
Mesmo com muitas tentativas de suborno e intimidação, Al Capone foi declarado culpado e pegou 11 anos de prisão.
A prisão e morte de Al Capone
Ele passou a maior parte de sua sentença na famosa prisão Alcatraz, sem contato nenhum com o mundo externo. Ele começou a apresentar fortes sinais de demência, decorrentes de uma sífilis adquirida quando jovem.
Durante essa época, ele começou a apresentar fortes alucinações. Era corriqueiro as noites em que passava em claro gritando por “Jimmy”. Ninguém sabe ao certo a quem Al Capone se referia durante esses delírios. Muitas pessoas acreditam que “Jimmy” era um fantasma de uma das vítimas do massacre de São Valentim. De fato, uma das vítimas era conhecida como James (“Jimmy”) Clark
Capone foi transferido em 1939 para um hospital psiquiátrico, após cumprir 6 anos e meio de sua pena. Ele morreu de parada cardíaca em 25 de janeiro de 1947 e foi enterrado no cemitério Mount Carmel, em Hillside, Illinois.
